Planet
Saturn
Also known as ZUHAL · SHANI · CRONUS · RINGED PLANET
The jewel of the Solar System.
Famous for its spectacular ring system made of ice and rock.
Appearance
A steady yellowish star, second-brightest planet at opposition after Jupiter.
Observing
Any small telescope at 30×+ reveals the rings — one of astronomy's most unforgettable sights.
Best viewing
Around opposition (mid-year)
Observing from Chitral
The rings resolve in almost any telescope over 60 mm — this is the view that converts visitors at public sessions. Titan is an easy 8th-magnitude point one or two ring-diameters out. The ring tilt changes over Saturn's 29-year orbit, so note the opening angle each season; edge-on presentations make the planet look strangely naked.
History & culture
Galileo saw Saturn as a body with 'ears' and was baffled when they vanished in 1612 during a ring plane crossing. Christiaan Huygens solved it in 1655: a thin flat ring, touching nowhere.
